Procrastination - Why Does A Person Procrastinate?

by Allison Thompson

There are many things which can stop you as a person from succeeding in life, but the biggest one of them all is procrastination. It is procrastination which can prevent a person from actually achieving their goals and put obstacles in their way. It is procrastination which can also make a person choose a particular path which will result in them not achieving what it was they first set out to do.

Unfortunately although you may not realize it, but you could actually be a procrastinator yourself. In this article we provide you with some pointers which will help you to identify and hopefully understand what procrastination is and whether you actually are one yourself.

1. A large number of procrastinators (around 20%) will soon identify that they are chronic procrastinator’s and will know that it leads to them leading a particular kind of lifestyle. The lifestyle they lead will often intrude into all aspects of their life causing it to be very difficult to lead what is considered to be a normal life.

2. A lot of procrastinators do not have problems with managing their time rather they will find it much more difficult to estimate just how much time they have in relation to say completing a particular task.

3. Although some people believe that we are born as procrastinators this is not the case. Many people will learn to procrastinate over time and will learn about it as they grow up. If for example you happen to be a child from a family where there was controlling figure (say the mother or father) then you are more likely to procrastinate than don’t have this kind of person in their lives. Children from such families will find it more difficult to control the way they act and how to deal with certain issues and problems for themselves.

4. A lot of people who procrastinate will generally consume more alcohol than those that don’t. This is simply because they use it as a way of helping them to avoid their problems and as a crutch to help them get through the worse times.

5. For quite a large number of people who procrastinate they will often use ways to distract themselves so that they can avoid doing those things that they don’t like to do or they don’t feel that they can do. Often they will do a task that they find easy to complete rather than going for the one they know they must do but which they see as far too difficult. This is because they feel that they do not have the right set of skills or abilities in order to achieve the required state of completion.

However luckily there are things a person can do in order to help change their habits in relation to them procrastinating. Certainly it may take time but through the use of the right kind of therapy including cognitive behavioral a person can slowly change the way they view the things that they do and help to stop them procrastinating as much as they do now.
