You might be surprised to know that fishing can be a dangerous sport. Fishing can also have its rewards with relaxation being at the top of the list.

Bad weather, fishing tackle malfunctions, and snagged and tangled lines can cause a lot of grief if you haven’t prepared ahead of time for such challenges.

When you’ve snagged your hook in the underbrush or your lines are all tangled go ahead and take immediate action to get it loose before you have a bigger mess on your hands. Sometimes it’s easier just to break off the snag or the twig than to try to untangle it. Tangled lines can sure be frustrating.

And if you get hung up on a really big log you may have to cut your line. Unfortunately this can cause other problems such as having a lure or hook floating in an area where a fish can get caught on the tangled line, but not be reached by the angler.

There are several items in your fishing gear that can have sharp edges. These can be hazardous if you are not careful. You can cut your self or get a hook stuck in your thumb while removing it from your catch. A necessary part of your fishing tackle is a first aid kit with medicated spray and peroxide, paper towels, cotton, band-aids, and other bandages.

Avoid running out of bait and having to cut your trip short by taking into stock how much bait you have left. If necessary divide your bait into halves, quarters, or thirds. A worm even if it’s divided can still move so don’t hesitate to use a split worm.

When you’re preparing to pack your clothes and fishing equipment for your trip check the weather. Knowing what the weather is forecast will help you to know whether you need warm, cool, or water resistant clothes. This can make the difference between a great fishing trip and a sour one.

Continue to monitor the weather, whether you are fishing from a boat or fishing along the shoreline. If a sudden storm comes up and lightning is starting to strike, head immediately to shore. Even on land, be aware of such conditions as darkening skies and flash floods.

Remember safety and preparation can mean the difference between a great fishing trip and disaster.
