Massage is effective for many conditions

by Bodhi BcLeod, LMT

As my massage therapy instructor used to tell us, “Massage is more than just a backrub!”

Indeed, according to scientific studies, massage effectively reduces the symptoms of carpal tunnel, frozen shoulder, tendinitis, and migraine headaches, among many other things. And, of course, it’s great for that chronic pain and tension in the neck, back and shoulders. (Touch Research Institutes.)

Furthermore, massage is therapeutic for the mind and spirit as well as the body. It gives relief to those with depression and anxiety and helps those with insomnia get more restful sleep. It’s beneficial to children with ADD and ADHD. (Ibid.)

For pregnant women, massage feels great on those swollen feet and is also healthy. It reduces labor time and complications. It even reduces the risk of birth effects. (Ibid.)

To find the right massage therapist for you, it may take some shopping around. Massage is an alternative and complimentary therapy, which means it’s unregulated. In California, every city has different standards in terms of licensing. Education, skill, experience and approach all vary widely among therapists.

Day spas have become popular and employ many great massage therapists. However, there are also many private practitioners who may be better able to suit your needs. Some are mobile and will come to you in your own home or office. Others work out of their homes or have their own private offices.

Private practitioners have dedicated themselves to their practices and are more likely to be specialized. There are many ways to find a private practitioner, but one place to start is the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals at abmp.com. You can search for therapists in your area and even search by specialty.

No matter who you are, the right therapist for you is out there. With a little time and patience, you will find him or her!
