During a background check, employment and character references are checked. Other forms go into education verification and such the like, while some firms are utterly thorough. It all depends on the sensitivity of the job and how much responsibility will be on the shoulders of the new employee. When all these come back positively, then the candidate is truly considered, otherwise they are discarded and others are sought after.
